Farmworker, blacksmith, goldminer. Early unionist on Tasmania west coast. Founder Workers Political League, Zeehan, Tasmania. Left ALP 1917 and became Nationalist. State politics: Tas MHA for Waratah 1906-09, Franklin 1909-17. Premier 1909, 1914-16. Attorney-General 1909, 1914-16. Minister for Education 1909-14. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Earle was appointed within hours of Ready's resignation as part of a manoeuvre by the Hughes Government to gain control of the Senate and pass a bill postponing a federal election for the duration of the War.
