The election of Joseph Vardon (AS, SA) was declared void by the High Court in 1907. He was replaced by a Labour nominee. This nomination was also voided by the High Court, and a special election held in 1908, which Vardon won (see Appointments). 2. The Labour Party became the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in 1908. 3. The Protectionist party and the Anti-Socialist parties fused to form the Liberal Party (Lib) in 1909. William Trenwith (Ind, Vic) also joined the Liberal Party. The state of the parties then was Liberal 21, ALP 15. --------------------------------------------------------------------
