The official Return gives only the total number of votes cast (359,623), not the number of voters who cast them. Since each voter could vote for up to three candidates, the total formal vote is taken to be 119,874 (359,623 divided by three). But since voters in Queensland could vote for fewer than three candidates, the actual number of voters was greater. The total formal vote for the House of Representatives in Queensland in 1903 was 112,668: if all seats had been contested it would have been about 130,000. 2. Percentages shown are percentages of 119,874, indicating the proportion of voters who supported each candidate. The percentages column will thus add up to 300%, since each voter cast three votes. 3. There were no Protectionist or Free Trade organisations in Queensland in 1903. The National Liberal Union (NLU) endorsed non- Labor candidates. Glassey was a Deakinite Protectionist and did not receive NLU endorsement. 4. The combined Labour vote was 53.5% 5. Bartholomew was Qld MLA for Maryborough 1896-1902. 6. Murray was Qld MLA for Normanby 1881-1901, Qld MLC 1901-03. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Senators' terms began 1 January 1904.
