AUSTRALIAN LEGISLATIVE ELECTION OF 29-30 MARCH 1901 ======================================================================================== THE SENATE ======================================================================================== NATIONAL SUMMARY ======================================================================================== Party Votes % Long Short Total ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Protectionist 139,797 30.4 6 7 13 Free Trade 166,177 36.1 9 8 17 Labour 48,609 10.6 3 3 6 Others 105,443 22.9 - - - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 460,026 18 18 36 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In all states except Tasmania, each voter could cast up to six votes. But since voters could cast fewer than six votes if they chose, the actual number of voters is not known. These figures have been obtained by dividing the number of votes polled by each party in each state by six. They are approximations only. In 1901 each state elected six Senators. The first three elected in each state were classed as long-term Senators, with terms expiring on 31 December 1906. The second three elected in each state were classed as short-term Senators, with terms expiring on 31 December 1903. Gregor McGregor (Prot, SA) and David O'Keefe (Prot, Tas) joined the Labour Caucus immediately after the election. The state of the parties then was Protectionist 11, Free Trade 17, Labour 8.
