In any case the official figures were widely held to be falsified. Bouteflika was the candidate of the outgoing military regime. The opposition candidates agreed to contest the elections after assurances that it would be free and fair, but all withdrew the day before polling, claiming voting fraud was being planned by the interior ministry.
