Under the new electoral system the country is divided into twelve districts, each of which elects members by proportional representation. Together they have 70 seats, one short of a majority. The Unity for Human Rights Party is an ally of the Socialist Party. The Socialist Movement for Integration is not in an alliance with either major party. In the week after the election the LSI agreed to support a Democratic Party government, avoiding a political crisis.
